Campaigners in the 1980s were challenging the use of animals in product and medical testing. There was very little information or images available about the tests or conditions that these animals were subjected to. The Animal Liberation Front were a direct action group who liberated animals from laboratories and farms and also took photographs and distributed then through photocopied newsletters to encourage further support for their work.
To contrast the gruesome imagery and to emphasise the ‘hidden’ product and medical testing I produced a ‘cute’ portrait of my new kitten William, made up from these ALF photographs and other available testing evidence.
